All the ones you see are built as belt driven units. You can still buy them new. Northern Tool sells them.
Yes, if you can machine, a alternator head can be converted. It's possible that the company who made the alternator may even have a drive end cap to convert it.
Yeah, I didn't remember seeing this in previous threads in the Homemade section. But I wasn't looking specifically for it though.

Is that Little bolt to hold the cooling fan on, or does it hold the shaft on?

There is a long bolt that goes all the way through center and threads into the tapered shaft. I used the same bolt that held it to tapered shaft on the original engine. Its the shaft bolt. Fan is held on by small screws

Ohhhhh, Now I remember, I took one of those off one time, never did find a motor for it so I chucked it.

Oh, Your engine was no good? This one is fine but after seeing the gen set attachment I figured this would be more useful around the yard than lugging it around as it was. Someone will have a need for the 11HP I hope.. Or maybe it will also get re-purposed.

Yes it was no good, that was 12 years ago I chucked it.

Coop - how do you plan to address the need to run the gen at a fixed rpm to achieve 60hz output? Could you mark the dash and position the throttle lever to certain point? Do you think the Kohler governor will respond enough to keep synchronous rpm under load? I maintained some large gensets over the years and throttle/load settings were always touchy. Voltage fluctuations can burn up an AC motor if you're not watching the output.

I understand all the concerns. We work on some pretty large generators here as well. 400hz A/C for larger aircraft and 28.8 VDC 2000 amp units for regional jets and smaller. Not much room for error on those when dealing with highly sensitive aircraft components..So my plan is to have a couple of analog meters attached to unit to monitor hz and volts which will allow me to achieve proper base RPM. The Briggs 11 Hp governor is not any more complicated than that of the 12 Hp Kohler. I suspect some droop in voltage here and there but within reason. Sure would be nice to have a electric throttle driver control to manage RPM like on larger gen sets but that would be overkill in my opinion. I doubt I will be running anything real sensitive with it. Lights, maybe a circular saw here and there "not my porter cable" but a cheap one I dont care much about. I wont be using this for power outage situations.. I have a back up generator for that. I will post some readings from the gen set once I get it up and running.

Small engine gen set governor's are made different than those in tractors. Same on Kohlers. (And Detroits, ect, ect, ect...) Completely different flyweight mechanism. Just saying.

No, they are not any more "complicated". Just more sensitive.

I will ad, that I agree keeping the Hz under control is important, but as long as you understand what you have, it shouldn't be an issue. No different than the old Pincore units, or a tractor driven PTO generator.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
