I did not expect the large reduction in gear ratio that Jonathan pointed out, which makes a reasonably sized tire pretty slow. If it had been a 2 to 1 reduction, then I might have built something with larger tires similar to the one dvogtvpe posted, perhaps building a miniature version of a larger IH tractor.

On the other hand, with a 4:1 reduction in the final drive, and a 48 inch tire, it would result in about a 2:1 reduction in speed, which might not be too bad for a "show" build. If I find a set of final drives for a reasonable cost, I might rethink the idea for a future build.

My next project is to build a "gator" with a cargo area behind a double seat. Perhaps a dump bed. I've got so many irons in the fire right now I'm just in the thinking/gathering components stage.
Then get an overdrive from MWSC for the tranny. That will speed it back up. They go up to 43%. Mike

That's an interesting idea. Will have to check it out. Thank you.

Yeah, but that's overdrive from stock. Not 43% overdrive from direct. It will speed it up, but not as much as direct driving the trans like a Lo-Boy.

The combination of a 43% overdrive plus a 2x increase in wheel diameter, might result in a reasonable ground speed with the final drives--assuming they are 4 or 5 to 1 reduction. Right?

Using a 48 inch tire, and with MWSC gear ratio calculator, a 47% OD gear set and Lo Boy final drives, would result in ground speeds of

---------3rd------2nd--------1st
at 4:1-- 8.0----- 4.6-------- 2.7
at 5:1---6.4------3.7-------- 2.1 mph

That can't be right. Top speed of a Lo-Boy is only 8mph in 3rd and it's trans is direct drive, and had roughly 48" tires on them. I'm not where I can figure it out right at the moment.

Best thing to do would be to direct drive the transmission.

OK, just need to find a set of final drives..not in any rush, will have to keep my eyes out.

Look at these pictures. One has a short shaft, the other has a long shaft. How would these work?

Those are off of an F-Cub. You need off a Lo-Boy. I *think* you can change the shaft, but not sure.

I have a parts Lo-Boy...... both finals....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
