Not sure if this thread belongs here or in the Customized forum. Trust the mods will move if it's appropriate.

Brought this 1973 108 home yesterday. Has a newer K-series replacement engine, but the label is gone so I don't know what it is. Yet. Turns over but not running. (was told it was running 9 months ago). Mostly complete, some minor rear fender damage. will trash the cobbled-up blade.

Good frame, minimal rust, transmission feels good. Clutch, disc brakes need work. Rear tires are dry rotted so they are trash. Working on a 16hp engine...

Once I get my 123 out of the shop, this one goes in for a tear down and assessment.

Looks good, wish I could find one for cheap in the series.

I think this series, 1X8/9 is my favorite. I paid $160 for this 108. Not sure that qualifies as "cheap" but I've seen much worse where they were asking $450 or more. He told me over the phone it had a creeper and he was asking $300 so I was actually excited, but he didn't know what he was talking about, or was BS'n' me (since it doesn't) so we settled on about half.

It may be a week or two before I make much progress, will post updates as I can.

Discovered last night this 108 is really a 128. Has a newer 12hp K301 engine in it. Haven't tried to start it yet.

So the 108 will provide the frame, rear end, brakes, steering, etc. The fenders are damaged and it needs a 14 or 16 hp engine. Got a line on a decent 147 I think. Can't seem to find a K341 anywhere, but the K321 in the 147 will work.

With any luck, will have that in a week or two. At that point I will have everything I need to start--it looks it will morph into a 148R build.

Brought home a complete and actually pretty nice 147 last weekend (yeah, no pictures yet, next time). This will provide the donor engine and fenders, a few other parts. Started to dis-assemble the 108, got the fenders, hood, grill assy, off so far. Will continue to strip down the 108 to the frame, and rebuild from there with the K321 from the 147. Not sure if I'll put another engine in the 147 or what yet. I did also pick up a couple running take out engines, a 10 and a 12 hp, so I have some options. The 12hp replacement engine in the 108 starts and runs, too, so that's good news. This looks like a 148R project now.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
