Default Check valve clearance

I purchased a Cub 1250 that had sat outside for several years. After cleaning out the mice nests and the wasp nests that had the carb throat plugged due to lack of an air filter I cleaned up the carb thoroughly. After all the electrical connections were cleaned the engine started but ran like crap. I've been working on engines for 70 years, but never saw one like this. Engine would not idle at all, at around 2500 rpm it would run but after it ran for several minutes it would slow down and die. Next the head came off and sure enough the gasket had been leaking. Sanded the head down, new gasket and it should run great, no way. Removed the cover for the valve tappets and the exhaust valve had negative clearance. I set the exhaust to specs and checked the intake, right on. Wrapped everything up and hit the starter, wow, it ran great and I called it a day. I don't know how far the valve was being held open but it was too much. I should have counted the number of flats that I turned it in but didn't.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
