Default 122 only running sort of great

Picked up a new to me(obviously) 122 this week and it starts and runs great. - sort of.

Using it to pull a little swisher rough cut mower today which should be cake for it. But whenever it’s under any stress (like going up a hill)in second gear, it lugs, acts like it’s going to die- and sometimes does. In first gear it does OK. Third gear is out of the question. On flat land, it does fine in all the gears.

When it dies, I have to wait a minute to crank it back up. Makes me think it’s a Fuel supply issue.

I’ve adjusted the carburetor and even swapped it with a known good one off my 126 and it still acts the same.

Going to replace the fuel filter tomorrow, but what else should I be looking at if that’s not a magic bullet?

Thanks.

Jbo

Hate to ask but does it have enough gas in the tank?

Pull choke and see if it picks up any when issue occurs, if so it’s a fuel supply issue. Maybe tank or sediment bowl screen clogged?

How is the governor adjustment? Top rpm 3600?

Excellent question. Plenty of gas. Choke has zero effect.

I’m thinking if the filter is clogged, the choke might not matter much ‘cause it’s not getting fuel anyway.

Thanks.

It came from the factory with a sediment bowl. That might need cleaning.

Somebody’s removed the sediment bowl along the way. Just a little pancake style filter now.

I highly suggest replacing it with a sediment bowl. Various vendors here have them plus they are available at NAPA and other auto or farm stores.

The thread coming out of the tank is 1/8" NPT

Clogged filter? Shut-off valve open all the way? Remove the line from the carb and allow fuel to flow into a container. Make sure you good flow.

I have good flow from the filter. (Added a shutoff so fuel briefly went everywhere.

Pardon my ignorance, Jeff, but what’s the advantage of a sediment bowl over or in addition to a fuel filter. Seems to me a fuel filter would be a reasonable replacement for a sediment bowl. ?

Thanks for all the feedback.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
