Default SGT steering (1772) "slip"?

So, I had most of this machine apart and back together again, including draining and refilling the hydro system with Traveller "hytran compatible" fluid. I've been running it a few hours now, and an interesting behavior has come to my attention. Sometimes (only sometimes) when I turn the steering slowly, the wheels do not move. If I turn it the other way, or turn it a little faster, it will "grab" and move the wheels. Happens going either direction. I'm assuming the steering valve is going bad? I didnt notice this behavior before I did all the work to it, but it's possible I just hadnt noticed it and I didnt put a lot of hours on it before I torn it all down...

I had the same problem with both my 1572 and 1772. It was the hydraulic steering cylinder. When I ran across my first bad cylinder on my 1572, it was still under warranty. I disconnected one hydraulic line off of the steering cylinder and slowly turned the steering wheel so it would cause the still connected hydraulic hose to pressurize. With the steering wheel moving slow enough to NOT cause any movement on the rod on the cylinder, I had hydraulic fluid flowing from the open port on the cylinder thereby showing me it was leaking internally.
If you search this site, there are some threads that offer instructions and part numbers to rebuild the cylinder. I did my cylinders on the 1572 and 1772 and they are working fine. I also noticed the hotter the unit was, the worse it acted prob due to the hyd fluid thinning due to heat.

I replaced the cylinder on my 2182 after it started doing the same thing, coincidentally right after I serviced it and changed the hydro oil. It completely resolved the issue, feels much better and is very responsive now. I picked up a new cylinder from CCI for $100. Will try to rebuild the old one if it doesn't look too complicated... Thanks for the help.

I did the same last week. Toying with rebuilding the old as a spare, but then again for $100 it's hard to beat...knowing me, I'd order $25 in seals, then spend hours on it

OP, you're a lot better off trying the cylinder before the steering section. Sounds like it's bypassing internally. Mine had an external leak -- it's not a very strong cylinder design. They aren't cheap, although there is a rebuilt one on FeeBay.

I believe rebuilding those cylinders entails cutting the end off the cylinder, then replacing the seals, then welding it back together.

You are correct. Parts are listed in a post on this forum. All readily available, basically a few o-rings and a seal.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
