Default Help identifying bolt hole k321

While mowing the other day on my 1450. I developed a significant oil leak. While looking at it today I noticed oil spraying out of a bolt hole, just aft of the governor pivot shaft and just forward of the valve cover. The threads are stripped. Before I can develop a plan of action, I need to know what that hole is used for.

Special screw and copper washer goes in there and it has apparently fallen out.
It holds the governor shaft in place and I would not operate that machine again until it is replaced.

Unless I'm seeing wrong ,is the gov arm off the shaft ? and the open hole is for the pin that keeps the gov. gear on the stub shaft inside the engine ? if so your gov gear is likely to have fallen off of the stub shaft and got eaten by the cam ! I hope that's not what I think I see !

I took the arm off the shaft to get better access to the hole. It was running fine when I noticed the oil leak. That was my next question though. If that missing pin holds things in place, then this job is not just simply replacing a pin? The threaded hole will need repaired, so It’s not as simple as just replacing the pin anyways.

I've not seen those holes strip out.
Are you sure it is stripped? that is threaded in the cast iron block and the retaining bolt is just not easily over tightened.
IIRR it is a screwdriver head
Do yer self a favor as stated, do not run the engine as others said, you might be lucky and the gear was retained on the stub shaft by the governor pivot, till you get a close look and formulate a plan of repair.

Just did one where the gear came off the shaft,turned it over on the engine stand, pulled the flywheel,bearing plate,oil pan,crank and cam to put a new gear in, have to play with the rod position in the bore to get crank in and out though, rod and rings were good so I didn't disturb them,new gear,gaskets and seals,back up and running no problems !

If the inside of your frame rails are caked with oily dirt and the top of your mower deck is covered with grass debris, it might be prudent to do a good search. You might just get lucky and find a hen's tooth.

I had that on that 1200 I had. Screw was on the frame next to the block, discovered it before I ever attempted to start the engine for the 1st time. I wound up having to heli coil that engine. It wound up with a total rebuild.

I appreciate the help and advice. I’ve pushed it into the garage until i can pull the motor. I need to replace the hydro fan anyway so it works out!
