I used the 00 grease in the gearbox also. It had chassis grease in it before. New seals and new outer 1630 bearings, inner bearings were OK. No vent no fill plug no IH emblem on this box. Felt seals in the excluders are a little tight, I may have to trim them down somewhat.

I'm putting my #1 tiller back together this afternoon and have a question. You mentioned a chain adjuster. I do not see one on mine nor in the schematic. Can you show a picture or clarify that for me. I do have one screw going through the stamped housing that I do not know what it is for. It is between the top to bearings. I do not see this screw head in any of your pictures or Sugarmakers. There is nothing it is attached to on the inside. It protrudes about 1/2". Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

Steve, IIRC, the chain adjuster is only on the #2 & 2B tillers. As mounted on the tractor it is facing the front, it is a 1/2" bolt threaded into the case to take up slack in the tine drive chain. In this image, it threads into the nut welded inside the case at the top center.

Thanks for the quick response. That explains the chain adjuster. Do you have any idea what the screw is for in my cover? Like I said, I don't see it on the schematic. Thanks.

I saw where you mentioned the felt seals were tight and you might have to trim them down. Did you do that? I got my chain case together and tightened the dust covers down, being careful to keep the cover centered on the shaft, and the pulley is tight as heck, turning it by hand. I'm thinking about going on and finishing the build and hooking the main assembly up to the Cub, less the tines and run it for a while and see if it loosens up. The felt has wear in, right?

I trimmed the felt seals last night, and it turned much easier, just took off a little at a time.

Thickness-my new bearing collars are thicker, and installing and marking the excluders showed too little clearance. I only removed enough to make it turn good. Much stiffer than w/o seals, but at full thickness it would barely turn. I'm sure they will wear in now, I also soaked them w/oil.

Hey 64fleetside, you ever find a tiller belt guard? I have 2 tillers and 1 belt guard, thinking about having another one made. And what does the belt guide look like/where's it mounted?
