Default 1863 fuel solenoid

Hello, I’ve got an 1863 which recently started having this problem. It will start and die after 1-2 seconds.

By accident, I discovered that if I keep the key on start, it’ll stay running. I suspect the starter is also still turning so not a good solution but that indicates it’s not a fuel pump/filter problem.

I’ve pulled the carb and find that the fuel solenoid will retract fine when I turn the key to lights, but the solenoid stops retracting when the key is in “run”, and when it’s in “start”, the solenoid fluctuates in and out. (I suspect this is maybe the starter drawing too much voltage and so not enough for the solenoid to stay open?)

Should the solenoid stay open through all the key cycles? I also see there is some kind of oil sentry marking on the motor. Is there something in that system that could be causing my trouble?

There are 2 circuits that apply power to the solenoid. You losing the circuit for run mode. Do you have a wiring diagram?

I do have a diagram. I see there are a couple diodes on those circuits. Any guess on where they are located so I can check those along with the wiring?

Looks like it might be my new ignition switch from last year. It doesn’t have continuity between the the B and R terminals sometimes. Is there a replacement switch that’s better than others? I think this one came from amazon.

The Indak sourced OEM Cub switch would be considered the best.

Does the switch lose continuity between B and R when it is in the Run position?
It is normal for the switch to not have continuity between B and R when in the Start position.

Installed a new switch and it’s working fine now. Thanks for the help, I wouldn’t have thought the new switch would have failed so quickly. Got a legit switch from the dealer this time.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
