Default 38" deck repair

My deck has a small hole which should be easy to patch / weld.

It also has part of one of the arc shaped pieces behind the blade rusted away. Does anyone know how easy or diffficult this is to repair, and if this piece is very crucial to the airflow / discharge of the deck?

Thx, Josh P

The rusted away part(s) are called 'baffles". The baffles in some cases, are still available from Cub Cadet, but rather expensive. A lot of guys have simply custom fabricated these baffles and welded them in. YES, for the best cut, it is better that they are there.

I just went to my steel pile and grabbed a piece of the appropriate width strap iron, bent it in an arc to match the remains of the old one, and welded it to the deck after removing all the old one. On my 42 inch stamped steel deck it made a huge difference. Watch the blade clearance as you weld it in, and remember some day you may have a brand new and wider blade so make enough room.

Hardest part of the job will be cleaning the weld area before you weld in new steel.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
