Default 1440 Predator swap

Bought this 1440 with a weak 14hp Vanguard and decided to do a 22hp Predator swap since the rest of the tractor was complete and in reasonably good shape. I was surprised to see how easily it all came together. All I have left to do is install hour meter and dual exhaust.

Nice swap. I was surprised how well my 1711 one went, too. Nothing to it but to do it.

Default thanks

I also have a 1782 that will eventually also get a Predator swap. The Kubota in it, is super hard to start on the hottest of days due to low compression. Figure it's the most economical way and maintenance, will be easy with same engines, and extended warranties.

Nicely done. When you say it went pretty easy, does that mean it was
a direct swap or did you have to make some modifications?

Thanks, All I really had to do was get the Hydro drive shaft shortened a bit by my local welding shop. All bolt holes lined up, never had to drill a hole. The PTO clutch slid right on and lined up perfect and the old PTO bracket from the Vanguard was a direct bolt on and fit perfect (the bracket that keeps the PTO from simply spinning). The easiest way to wire it was to first eliminate the existing wiring harness, (I don't need a bunch of dummy lights). Then I simply extended the wiring and key switch from the predator to fit the dash. I added a choke cable because the existing one is too short. Throttle cable is the original works great and needed no modification to work. I have to still install an hour meter, temp sensor that I bought, and later today I will buy some 1" pipe for the dual exhaust 'cause the predator muffler is way too big. I will update with more pics once I have completed these things. One thing to note is that I bought an adapter from " Predator 670 performance " to adapt the Predator to the Cub Cadet hydro drive shaft. Had to drill and tap a couple of 1/4-20 holes and used existing bolts, worked like a charm.
Headlights are not hooked up because I really will never mow in the dark and no brake lights because I shouldn't have any traffic behind me.

If you're going to run it without a firewall I suggest that you don't put the side panels on it or you will recirculate the hot air from the cooling fins and over heat the engine.

I'm looking for another D640 for mine. Same issue.

When i researched these engines a few years back the only real problem i found is the charging system built in is only 3 or 5 amps (don't recall for certain) while the CC briggs is 16amp and the CC kohler command is 15 amp.
So with an electric clutch you'll likely have electrical problems. As it's really only for maintaining the battery charge.

Let us know how it holds up. I just read the review on the Harbor freight site and while there are good reviews, there are over 20% bad. Made in china has not been good for me.

Default 1440 update

I finished up the exhaust, hour meter and reinstalled the plastics. All seems well and running good. I will check charging system with PTO engaged and at operating speed. Supposedly the charge system has been increased on newer models. I will reinstall the firewall to help with the cooling. I have the extended 2 year warranty and had read many reviews prior to purchase (you'd be hard pressed to find any motor for a lawnmower that's not made in China). Seems that many that have had issues are using them for applications that the engine was not intended for or they have modded them. I'm simply using it to cut some grass and this will not be my primary mower, I have a zero turn as my main mower. I made a cutout so I can pull the dipstick without removing the plastic and I will make a cutout on the other side to expose the oil cooler to fresh air. All in all, I am pleased thus far.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
