Cast Iron Rear Axle Swap in 782D
Hello all, I picked up a 1984 782D a few months ago and have been working on getting it serviceable. I noticed an excessive body roll with it while pushing it from the trailer into the garage, upon further investigation I realized I had one broken bolt in the rear axle and a broken tab up front. I happen to have a 149 parts tractor and was considering swapping the aluminum rear axle for the cast iron that came in the 149.
For those that have completed this swap, was it worth it? Anything I need to be mindful of? Or should I just find a serviceable aluminum axle and go back to stock?

I've seen guys swap rear axles in the same series before, not sure of any benefit to put a different one in besides cost and potentially rear sleeve hitch applications.

Just so you know when I did the same swap in mine the fuel tank was a no go because it hugged the rounded contour of the rear end. Size all of that up before you go all in.

Put an Xtreme GT rear end brace on your existing rear end and don't even bother with the broken front mount.

+1 on what Sam said.
It also helps if you put a rear hitch plate on the back from a Cyclops or better yet a Cat 0 hitch from Xtreme. You can TIG weld the busted ears. (not needed with the brace kit) Chase all your threads with a bottom tap to make sure nothing is stripped. Make sure and use a torque wrench set at 30ft/lbs on reassembly. You can't put a sleeve hitch on a diesel because of the fuel tank.

Oak the Xtreme Cat 0 doesn't work with the rear end brace, the lower attachment points need to be bent outwards about 3/8" to clear the brace. The factory Cub hitch is an easier install.
