Default Deck rust

I am wondering if any one can tell me where to look on a 54 inch deck where they commonly rust out. It is on a 2001 3240 and is the style that has the rails on it for the anti scalp wheels. I am also wondering how high I can raise the deck, hopefully 6 inches.

The 54" deck should be a model 290.

That deck rides the ground on the 2 front casters and the rear deck roller that will stripe your lawn. You adjust your cut by adjusting the caster height and rear roller. You lower the tractor lift all the way and let the deck ride on the ground when cutting.

Like most decks, if they sat outside they will rust where the spindles are or any of the low points on top of the deck. The 48" (model 289) and 54" (model290) are pretty well made but Cub had an iussue with getting the paint or powder coat to stick good on anything they made at the time. They can and will rust on the bottom if the owner doesn't clean them or put them up for the winter properly.

I'm not sure if it will lift 6" off of the ground either. I'm not sure if any Cub Cadet can do that. Are you looking to buy one?

Yes I am looking at one to buy. My series 2000, model 2165 raises up at least 5". it is in good shape but I am interested in power steering that the 3240 has. The 2165 is in great shape and I hope I am not making a mistake by looking to get a 3000 series.

I sold this one to a guy up in Tennessee a few years back.

No other Cub Cadet deck will give you the cut of the 3k series.

The 54" decks on a 3000 series are commercial grade and very heavy gauge steel. Based on the pics you posted I would guess that the deck on the 3240 is in pretty good shape if it was maintained as Oak mentioned. Overall cosmetic condition of the tractor looks pretty good as well. Because of the heavy gauge steel it takes quite a bit of abuse to rot them out. If you liked your 2165, you will love the 3240.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
