1872 bolts to tighten front axle
Book says to break jam nuts loose, turn about 3 or more turns and then tighten adjustment bolts counter clock wise to tighten. Is the jam nut a standard thread to loosen(counter clock wise) or does it turn clock wise to loosen. I tried to turn both ways but could not get it to move. Maybe too weak today. If I know for sure which way to turn I may talk the wife into breaking them loose. Thanks for your help and have a great day.

According to the Cuib Cadet Parts & Service Lookup site listed at the top of the page, it is a 3/4 - 10 Standard Castle Nut.

1872 axle bolts
Thank you Roland. I must have overlooked that in the manual. So I should turn the jam nuts counter clockwise to loosen them. Just had supper. Going back to the garage and give them another try. Maybe I will be a little stronger after eating. Thanks again and have a great day.

Mr Bob is saying "nut's" me thinks he is referring to possibly the ones near either end of the axle that rub on the axle to keep it in alignment
Disclaimer: I don't know if his Tractor is Power steering and has them Either way the pivot bolt as well as the adjustment nuts are not left handed. so righty tighty lefty loosie prevails. |

1872 axle Adjustment bolts
Thanks for chiming in Ol'George. In spite of myself, I got the bolts adjusted against the axle on both sides. One really needs a short handle 3/4" wrench to make the job easier. After having it jacked up, it seems both front wheels need new bearings. One job leads to another. Thanks for the help and have a great day.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
