That kit worked. No more leaks and the unit is quiet.
BTW, those springs were tricky just like everyone said!

That's the one I used for my 2182 box. I also ordered a spring kit because I remember they like to fly away and I didn't want to be stuck waiting because I lost one.

Do you have the manual for it? I think this is it.

If you didn't order yet, but I think you did, this is the kit to get.

Dredging up an old thread here. I've got an 1872 with hydro fluid leaking out of the TOP fo the steering column at the wheel. I assume, in reading thru this thread, and others, that my bits need to be rebuilt with new seals etc.

My big Q is, how am I to be sure what model steering valve is on this unit? While I don't need to use the tractor over the winter months here, it's going to be a large hassle to get it to/from the barn --> garage (as presently both the in/out main lines from the hydraulic pump have failed)

Is there a tell-tale way to know what rebuild kit I need if I have the serial/model number off the tractor? I've had to wrap a wrag around the column this summer to limp by until fall came and it was no longer needed for mowing.

I'd far more up for spending a little $$$ on a rebuilt kit, or simply replace the steering valve.... vs. buying a new machine, even if this thing has a few quirks about it, like the brakes no longer work, and all the safety measures have been removed by the PO.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the kit listed will work on your 1872. Here is the spring kit that will be needed also if they go flying across the room.

FWIW:
I went to my beloved Deere dealer for the kit, as it was 6 miles away, less expensive and in stock a few years back.
Also the Jesus springs were in stock for us old fumble fingered mechanics with not only poor hearing, but poor eyesight and memory problems as well
(just an FYI for others that might want to know there IS an alternative to the mothership Kub kibbits
IIRR Parker is the manufacture.
That steering unit was popular but now we will be seeing more and more "electric" steering assemblies as we regress to darker times of Gubber-ment controls.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm tempted to simply replace the steering unit and be done with it. At some point, I'd like to actually use the mower, or spend time with the family vs. repairing it.

"replace the steering unit" if they are available, and you have more money than you need, by all means that would be easier.

So, while I'm already making a mess of things adding the rear end braces from xtreme, I also ordered the seal kit from Messicks. It's now 70 bucks.. not 50..

SO, hopefully with these two items I'll be back moving and mowing again. My seals only leaked ones the unit got warm, it wasn't an 'always' deal.. not much of a problem plowing snow, but mowing in the summer it would start to weep out the top of the steering column about 1/2 way thru my mowing job.

Fingers crossed.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
