Looks great. Congrats on the new machine. We can help. Now turn the hood ornament the other way.

What part of Indiana do you live? Hopefully there is someone near by that can help you keep your good looking IH Cub Cadet running

I would use Kohler brand oil in your IH Cub Cadet. Todays automotive oils have a low zinc content. You need the zinc to help lube-cushion the tappets in the engine.

Go to the tech section area on this site. You can find manuals for the Kohler engine and tractor service manual.

The button on the lift handle is spring loaded. It is used to lock the deck at certain heights. The clip you are missing locks the button down so the deck can float. It is described in the operators manual. The clip is no longer available from Cub Cadet. You can find them on a certain auction web site from time to time in the $20.00 range.

As someone mentioned earlier about using a 2x4 cut to a proper length will make removing blades a snap. Lodge it in someplace that will hold the blade from spinning.
Check the fuel sediment bowl, possibly could need a new filter screen and gasket/ O ring. Grease all the grease points, which you'll find in the owner's manual.
Tire pressures, so you'll know they're all equal, so your deck cutting height if adjusted will present a fine cut lawn...
And one last thing. Please don't think of yourself as "incompetent. Think of yourself as "green horn" who just hasn't learned the ropes yet, but with time you potentially could be the guy who's answering the questions rather than asking then...
And it's big around here that if you're asking about something post pictures because what you call something, may not be the same as someone else, just makes it easier for everyone involved...
Keep at it, and you too could be a cub guru.
Ok well I went back and tightened the center blade better utilizing a 2x4 and its much better now. I forgot I had to use one to remove the center blade when I was taking them off to get sharpened. I will definitively look into the fuel sentiment bowl. I am assuming that's the clear glass bowl next to the carburetor?

I will be hunting for the Kohler oil today. Hopefully I will find a local spot for that. What kind of grease is recommended for the grease fittings? I didn't recall seeing that in the manual that I printed off. Also I will do my best to make sure to upload pictures as the questions come up.

Hood ornament has been turned around now, so it's correct now. I appreciate the heads up and the attention to detail. It was that way since I got it. I think my ex-stepfather took it off and did a rattle can job on the mower so he must have put it on backwards. One more thing to mark off the list...

I am south of Indianapolis in Greenwood Indiana. I also will be on the hunt for Kohler oil today so I can get the oil changed in it before mowing season. I was searching the tech section last night and seen a link for carburetor cleaning but the link wouldn't work for me.

If that's a rattle can job that man deserves a pat on the back. Looks really nice. That seat is money too, did he paint the rubber?

I'm really not sure I don't believe he sprayed the seat but there are a few runs in a spot or two on the tractor itself. The seat might have been sprayed as the white has some cracking maybe the paint cracked but I'm not sure!

Nice looking tractor! If you have some mechanical ability, you'll be just fine working on your cub. I have a 104 and it's a pretty simple machine to work on. This site has a wealth of information too, it's helped me many times.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
