the other thread just referenced should help you. You will need to remove the plug in the bearing plate to see the marks. I had to use a scotchbrite pad to clean the flywheel to find the marks. But it seems like if you set the points to 0.020, you'll be close enough for it to run without dealing with the static timing procedure. Are you sure your valves are operating? Take off the square breather cover and observe the valve stems going up and down as you rotate the engine. If your exhaust valve is stuck open, it won't fire, for example.

Update. I still have spark and all other goodies. Problem now is I've burnt up the S/G in the process. She was smoking from the outside terminal. Took it apart and the wire from one of the field coils is completely broken in half and the insulation burnt up. This is the second time I've ripped this thing apart to fix the terminal.
I talked to the guys at the IH dealer and they want just under 300 bucks for a reman S/G. Anyone know of the best place to pick up a decent S/G for less? I see them on ebay for about 125 but am hesitant without knowing the quality. Any input helps. Thanks. Cory |

Take your S/G to a generator rebuild shop. It should cost less than $120.oo, but will be right. I have messed with S/G's for many years, and I will always take mine to a gen shop. Its the best money you will ever spend.
If you live too far from a gen repair shop, consider buying a new S/G off of fleabay. I bought a new one from a place in Logan, WV for $120.00, with free shipping. It was new and works great. Just my .02.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
