Default New to Only Cub Cadets and a 149 no start issue.

Long story short I picked up a 149 from an older guy with all the attachments, (tiller, snow blower, blade, and 50" deck). So far this tractor has been a dream. I have to replace a few things to include the voltage regulator, head gasket, rebuilt the carb and PTO.

A few days ago I returned from a week long work trip to Europe. The lawn needs mowed badly and now the cub will not start. Fuel and compression check out but no spark. I gapped the points using the static timing method and replaced the plug and still nothing. I'm new to these cubs and don't know where to go next. Any ideas??? There is an IH dealer a few miles from me so running to get parts is no big deal just don't know what to try next. Thanks in advance!

Double check your points, make sure you didn't leave or get anything that would prevent them from closing/conducting. Check for continuity across the points when closed. Assuming you have continuity through the points' contacts (as you need to have to do the static timing) then next stop is make sure, with ignition turned 'on', you have 12V at the coil. (between the + coil terminal (the one that is not connected to the points) and ground). If you do, then check continuity through the coil. If that's OK, then replace condenser and check for spark. Other possible failure: bad plug wire.

At least that's what I would do. Others may have additional suggestions.

Thanks sawdustdad I'll give those a try. I'm thinking that when I run into town tomorrow I'll pick a new condenser anyway while I'm working on it. Appreciate the reply, I just felt like I was troubleshooting blindly and needed some outside advice.

I would take a jumper wire and connect the battery directly with the coil and see if it starts. If not, then coil or points (or wires) are bad. If it does, you might have a bad switch.

It does turn over, right?

The motor does turn over. Can smell fuel from the exhaust after doing so. Checked the continuity of the coil. Ohms were jumping around like crazy so I couldn't get a concrete reading off of it. Thinking it's the coil after that test. I might just pick up a condenser along with a new coil tomorrow and see how she goes. Thanks for the responses everyone and I'll let ya know if that does the trick.

Welcome! I think I was interested in buying that 149 too! You bought it before I could get out there to buy it! Glad it's treating you well (other than a few issues). Hope you get it figured out soon. Let us know how it goes!

Finally made it over to the IH dealer today and picked up a new coil, condenser, and points. Figured while I had my hands dirty I'd just replace everything.

Get all the parts installed and still nothing. Started thinking it was in the original wiring. took a jumper wire from the negative side of the coil and held it on the screw that holds the original lead to the points. Gave her a crank and got spark! Now she cranks and sparks but no fire. I'm thinking I'm not timing it correctly. Where is this sight hole to see the "S" mark on the flywheel of the 14HP K321A? Am I just a moron?

On other k-series motors from what I know, the sight hole is behind the starter on the flywheel. Don't know if you can see it with the starter generator on. I've seen pictures of the timing routine, but can't for the life of me find them now.

This thread may help out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
