High RPM at shut-down
After a relaxing neighborhood cruise with my 1250, I like to let it idle for about a minute before shut-down. It has always idled faster when warm than when cold, but lately, it seems as if the engine idle speed when warm is getting more excessive. The engine runs good, has power to burn, and is rather easy on fuel.
I hate to mess with a a good thing, so two questions arise. First, does it hurt the engine to be shut down above an idle speed; and second, is there an adjustment I am missing, and a method to fix the problem? |

I don't like to shut them down above an idle. Does it hurt it...... not really. Not as long as the engine isn't super hot. It continues to put fuel into the engine as it stops, so that's not necessarily good.
1.) Lube the throttle linkage between the governor arm and carb. 2.) Adjust the governor 3.) Set the idle adjustment and speed In that order. Procedures are in the Kohler service manual for your engine. It is available for download in the Tech section on this site if you do not have a copy already. If you can't find it, let us know. If the problem persists, or you can't get it to idle down, you have a leaking gasket. Likely the carb mounting gasket. Check it while your working on it. Only other normal possibility is that the throttle shaft is worn on the carb. Check that too. |

Good to know, I have noticed this happening on some of my equipment too and wondered "what the heck". Usually just shut off the gas and wait for it to slow down that way and then shut it off. Thanks.. |

If the point gap closes, it will slow timing and slow idle speed. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
