Check Cub Cadet, seems like they are different part numbers for axles and tubes, may be different because of studs to hold the wheel on?

I think that is the difference yes. Wheel studs are different. But those can be changed out.

Default money pit followup

I checked the eBay post. The wheel studs are definitely different. My axles do not have studs. While the studded axles may work, there may be other differences leading to a cascade of unanticipated changes. If I have no other choice in the end I'll go but for now I'm attempting to find exact replacements.

The housings listed by cub classics that I mentioned ARE exact replacements.

There is a difference between the aluminum rear end parts and the cast iron rear end parts. Both are interchangeable within their respective cases.

You can put the later axle shafts in the CI housing, but you have to change the spider gears in the differential. Or swap the diff's. I should have mentioned that you have to stay with CI parts or AL parts depending which you have.

My 982 is pretty low number 6xxxxx and it has alum tubes and a cast center housing. Don't know if that was OEM or not.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
