Default Contemplating a Green one.

So there was an ad on craigslist. Guy had a few tractors for sale so I figured what the hell. Go see what he has. Hes in the same town as me anyway.

So after looking around a few min I see a John Deere 312 siting there. Asked him what the deal with it was. He said it runs fine but he thinks it needs a PTO. I started it up an looked it over. No smoke on start up, I did find a very tiny oil leak. Looks like its dripping from the governor shaft. Also noticed the wire looks frayed and possibly broken going to PTO. I asked him what he was cutting his grass with. He explained he picked up a cheap LT craftsman since he couldn't use the deere. I asked him if he would consider a trade... A Cub 129 for his deere. He followed me home and took a look. So now hes down to trade. If I do this the trade will happen after work tomorrow.

So guys, and gal... What do ya think? I know green is like the devil here but I know a few of you also have a couple hanging around.

I have never owned a small JD. I have had JD backhoes and a dozer but never a tractor. Any input will be appreciated.'

Thanks

Nothin wrong with that Coop. Same drive train as we have, I’ll be hated on but it’s “almost” a green quiet line. (I know Beth I know ) I’ve always been a fan of their hydro feel with the shock dampener gizmo. Decks normally turn to Swiss cheese but it’s a fine machine. Congrats. Pros and cons with all of the different models as you know but it’s a good one. Had it’s younger brother a 318 for a while and loved it, onan was smooth.

I grew up Green. They make a fine machine but like any used ( quality ) machine, maintenance makes the difference between a money pit and a good value.

Good luck with it

Good point Jeff,

BTW. After a quick search I figured out why they call them green ones "I mean besides the color". Looks like pretty common parts are fetching a lot of green. Just saw a "john deere" ignition coil and wire for 70 bucks???

Maybe this is a mistake LOL

Maybe this guy is just on crack... LOL.. found some cheaper ones

You'll find they are "quite proud" of that color and you will spend a lot of it for genuine parts.

The last JD my grandfather purchased was 1988 model 318 with a two cylinder Onan. My brother is still using it.

If I were going to own a green tractor it would have to be a 140 H3.

The two best brands of lawnmowers ever made were bare bones, no gadget or frills Deeres and Cadets. Unfortunately they both tried to build some hot-rod Murray competitors or reinvent the wheel (forgot where they came from).
My dad still has the 110 Deere lawnmower he bought BEFORE going to work for the local IH dealer in 68. He retired in 91, and we cut grass with that 110 the whole time. We haven't ran it in a couple years, but its family and ain't going anywhere. It was around 94/5 that a 128 non runner and a 382 with a blown engine showed up here. Dad had picked up a couple more Deere's. I came home from work one day and he had 3 broken lawnmowers in the shop, all his. The 2072 came up for sale and we made a deal, some Deere's were going bye bye and the 2072 was coming to take over. At some point I just decided it needed some friends. This season we are running 3 Cadets, maybe a 4th before the leaves fall.

Plus when you get bored with it, you can part it out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
