UPDATE: Bought brand new carb ($70) off of Norm at iSavetractors.com had to switch a few minor things, (choke shaft, throttle shaft) both were super easy to swap. Installed carb, opened fuel valve, left bowl fill up and she started up and purrs like a kitten. Only adjustment I had to make was to adjust the idle screw. Mowed my entire lawn and it worked perfectly. Then I took it to my cabin and spent 3 straight hours mowing and she never even hiccuped. New carb is styled after the old style Carter carbs with all the adjustments, plus removable seat and main jet needle. Highly recommend checking out their site.

I'd sure be checking to make sure the main jet is open enough. It will run lean, and most people never know until it's too late and you score a piston. Read the manual and adjust it accordingly.

I do have a manual, I will check it out. I was actually worried about running lean. Someone once told me that a good indicator of lean/rich conditions is the color of the center porcelain on the plug. Black is rich, white or is lean, and a tan or chocolate color is just about perfect. Anyone else ever hear that?

That's correct. A spark plug color chart is in a lot of service manuals.... but you don't need to pull a plug to figure out the carb adjustment. Read the manual on how to adjust it, and err on the side of rich. Air cooled engines like it a tad rich.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
