Default CC 1440 Front Crankshaft seal installation

I am trying to replace a front crankshaft seal on my CC 1440. Part is BS-805049S. I am having a difficult time getting it into the crankshaft without the seal spring popping out. I believe the part I ordered is the correct part, is there a special tool I need to do this? Any suggestions is appreciated.

It's popping the spring because there is a lip that the seal and bearing sit on, and the "step" between the two sizes of the crank isn't gradual enough. FIRST, check and make sure you didn't damage the seal. You may want to just get another one. If ok, you need to make something to let the seal glide up onto the step. You need something thin, and plastic preferably. I usually use a 20oz pop bottle. Take the wrapper off the bottle, then cut the ends off so it is just a hollow tube. (Like a paper towel roll.) Then, split it down the middle length wise. Wrap it around the crank, clear in where the seal goes and let it overlap. Mark it, cut the excess off, so that it only overlaps maybe 1/2". Lube it up with oil, then slide the seal up and over it. Drive your seal into the housing, then just pull the plastic out. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I would have made you some pics, but I'm sitting in my bed on my laptop, and I'm too lazy to get up, LOL! Good luck!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
