In my single-minded way, I didn't think to check back in here...

I've located a GT2550 fairly close to me (2hrs away) for a great price. Reportedly it runs, but the fuel pump is leaking allowing fuel into the crank. Going to look at it today.

My plan is to either keep this thread updated with the swap or start a new thread. I don't know how quickly the swap will happen if I do bring the GT2550 home.

Well....the GT2550 came home for $200 with 482hrs.

Took the valve cover and fuel pump with me off the 3225. Put it on and it fired right up. Seems to run great. No smoke.

From brief inspection, the PTO on the 2550 is electric with a single pulley VS the vacuum actuated dual pulley on the 3225. I'll have to see how that'll work out.

As I said in my last post, this swap won't be done quickly.

I replaced my CH225-66549 with a 24 hp PA-CH-3328.

The 66549 had a very similar failure. A rod broke and caused catastrophic failure as indicated by a 2" diameter hole in the same location you described (behind the starter/solenoid)

The 3328 didn't have the exhaust manifold "hole" that supplied the PTO with vacuum so bypassed that by installing a separate 12v vacuum pump and line. I guess I could have torn down the new engine and installed a different manifold and vacuum line.

I wonder how many other folks out there experienced broken rods in these engines?

Default Post a chart?

If any of you do the research on the critical differences in this engine family, please make a chart and share it here.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
