Default Not a parts tractor

If you're into Cubs and you've dragged several home, you may have at some point, bought a package deal that included a tractor the seller included, "for parts." After getting it home and walking around it several times, that little guy with the black cape and pointy red horns sitting on your shoulder whispers in your ear "it's too good to part out - BUILD IT!!" and so the Cub fever continues.
When I did my deal with CubDieselFan, I got the project 1772 I just finished and a 1782 "for parts." Here's a picture of it when I brought it home. The D640 Kubota is in pretty decent shape, turns over on the starter, and shows signs of wanting to run, so the decision was made to spend some time to make it run and move. Yep, I've decide to put it together!
Here's where it is now with the tin off, a good bath, the fuel tank cleaned and all new fuel lines / filters. The steering was set up when we loaded it down in Tennessee. Today I found the upper nylon block that is the bearing for the tilt steering was seized to the shaft. After freeing it and cleaning the shaft, the steering wheel turns easily. I've never seen a hydraulic valve as rusty as the lift valve on this 1782. Replacing it is on the to do list, along with the rusty hydraulic lines.
This one has good bones, AND IT'S TOO GOOD TO PART OUT!!

Good save, Doc!

The first 2182 I bought for parts had similar issues. The steering shaft was froze up and all pitted under the tilt block thingy. Must have sat outside a while.

That engine would be sweet in a 782.

That should really make for a nice worker! I hardly ever see any diesels for sale around here.

Yes... I have a red 682 sitting in my garage right now that I keep looking at and thinking I should fix it up. It's in pretty rough shape though...

The tractor is in good hands. I went back through my texts from the previous owner and he got it in a parts lot from a dealer in Ohio. Not sure how many years ago but several. It was sold originally, in Pennsylvania, if I remember correctly. I think there was a tag on the back of the seat. That Cub has spent a lot of miles riding on a trailer. Now it will run again.

How bad is the wiring?

Wiring is actually pretty good, but does show some green in some of the plugs. All are easy fixes. Clean the connectors and check with Ohm meter. I don't mind electrical work, so I'll print the schematic and go circuit by circuit and do continuity checks on all of it. No better time than now, it's clean and accessible. I just need to find a few missing pieces, like the air cleaner (same as on all the Kubota/Cubs) and a shut off solenoid. Once I repair the radiator, I just need all the plastic of course, typical one eye.

Shut off solenoid is NLA, I used an emergency shutoff cable I had for an old Detroit Diesel on the 1782 I had.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
