I suppose I should also ask the question that I don’t want to ask. Assuming the fix requires splitting the rear end, is it worth fixing? Or am I better off just throwing that money toward another used unit (preferably with gears, based on this experience)?

I don't think you understand. Buying a gear drive tractor doesn't change anything. It still has splined axles and hubs, unless you get an older Cub, then it will have a different set up entirely.
If the axle splines are still good, get a new hub. It's likely you need both though. I would look for a used transaxle. Or, go buy a Cub Cadet made before 1994 or so. |

Got the report from the repair shop today. They pulled the transaxle and opened up the case. One of the large internal gears was broken in half and the other large gear had a hairline fracture. A couple of the smaller gears were ground down pretty well. So after $290 in parts and 5 hours of labor she will be back on the grass.

Good to hear, start it up and check it out at the dealer before it leaves their property.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
