2185 HDS axle seal question
I added the 2185 from my dad to my livery yesterday. He gave it to me and was happy that it is a dry tractor, that is it doesn't leave a puddle on the ground after sitting. I loaded it up and noticed very slight dampness around the left axle housing. Got it home and the left axle seal had blown out on the ride home. HyTran all over the trailer deck. I parked the tractor on a side hill to minimize leaking.
Has anyone replaced this particular seal? Part number 921-3020A, Number "5" on the chart. Looks like i have to remove the right hand axle subhousing by bolts number "7" and slide the assembly off then remove snap ring "5". Then remove the axle assy and replace the seal. Smear gasket sealer on the mating surfaces and reassembly. Let sit for 2 days and fill. Am I missing something? What part is the axle splines fit to? Part "30" or "32". Is this just a simple slide fit? Any ideas tips or tricks are appreciated. https://www.ccparts.com/cub-cadet-pa...85-4152-162208

I've not done that on a 2000 series yet but that looks correct. Here is the link to the free manual and it explains it on page 5-88. Good luck and take some pics for us.

The axle splines will slide into the splined differential side gears.
Note that the book makes a big deal out of re-installing "new" snap rings. |

Thanks both. I'll order a new snap ring as well.

Looking at the parts diagram, I'm wondering if you can pull the axel by just removing the snap ring on the outside that holds the seal and bearing in the axle tube without pulling the rear and axle tube off the rear? If it was me I'd give that a try first.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
