124 cranking issues
Just started having an issue with my 124 not cranking over when you turn the key. Checked the battery and it’s charged fully. When you turn the key you hear the starter solenoid click, but the starter/gen isn’t turning. I hooked some jumper cables to the battery and that didn’t change anything. If I hold the key in the start position and help turn the starter pulley, it turns over at a normal speed and it starts.
This started after it sat in the garage all winter with no issues when I put it away last season. Any idea where to start looking? It does have the original harness. The starter terminals are tight. Solenoid? |

I would suggest to focus on the Battery Cables. Make sure that the cable ends are: clean - bright - tight on each end of both.

Good advice from Roland, also your starter/gen is probably older than you. It is not unheard of, that the brushes are worn.
Might to be something to check after the simple usual things. |

Strange that it just started doing it after it sat over the winter in the garage. No issues when it was put away. Hopefully it’s something easy to find. I’ll start with your suggestions. Was storing it for a friend and this is what it leaves me!

Cables are clean at the battery, starter/gen and the solenoid. Still the same issue. Loud cluck from the solenoid and no movement of the starter. Not sure about replacing the brushes because I’ve never done it.

you will usually get a click out of a working solenoid. but I have an 8hp Kohler Magnum here (not on a machine at the moment) that has electric start and it has the ign switch and solenoid mounted on the engine.
When I last tried to start this engine a few years ago it started fine with the key. just hook up battery power, hit the key and away it went. I went to pull it out from under the bench, and get it freshened up and running again. When I went to start all I got was a faint click. Jump the solenoid and it would crank right over. Tested ign switch, its fine. I wound up having to replace the solenoid to make it start as intended. I think they get tarnished up from storage then don't make good contact within any more. |

You should not work on it without the owners consent, if you damage it more, you will have pay to fix it.

Your armature may be tarnished, or the brushes corroded if it was stored somewher damp. I had a generator that wouldn't gen....armature was tarnished....polished it up with some 500 grade paper, and presto, genning again!
