Default 2182 engine quits when hot

I’ve owned Cub Cadets for years, from a 124 when I was growing up to a 782 for my own home and now a 2182. My 2182 was actually a free find, it had been stored outside for an unknown length of time and the exhaust manifold was broken. I took it home, cleaned the carburetor, replaced the main starting fuse and it started right up. After brazing the exhaust manifold on replacing the hood, grill, sides and overall cleanup, I have a very nice lawn tractor. Lately I started to sputter and quit once the engine warmed up. I thought, Bad Coil, or not getting gas and I even checked this forum for people with similar problems. Most of them said bad coil also. Fuel pump seemed to be working great, I replaced the coil. Started cutting grass and engine surged and quit after first round. So I checked the fuel flow, and only a small amount was flowing to the filter and fuel pump. So I worked my way back to the tank. These tractors have two petcock valves under the tank, one on each side bedside the inner fender. I removed both and found them completely clogged with dirt. Cleaned them out and reinstalled, and tractor runs great again. If you ever have to do this, have a couple of new rubber grommets for the valves on hand, you’ll likely tear one or both during removal. They are part #935-0149. I pulled the grommet and valve out together, if you don’t want to drain the tank, have a cork or rubber plug ready to plug the hole. After cleaning the valve, insert the grommet first and then the valve into the grommet. Thought I would put this out there since it solved my engine surging and cut off problem. Hope to keep this 2182 going for years to come, what a great lawn tractor!

First, welcome to OCC....

Next, the 2182 is not a lawn tractor. It is considered a Super Garden Tractor (SGT). It is very much capable of handling ground engaging implements.

Enjoy your tractor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
