My New Tool "Johnson Model-B"
I've been needing a saw for a while now and i was thinking about one of the chinese bandsaws at HF, then i ran across this one on craigslist. Its a model b and takes a 89" blade. Its seen a few years, but it runs with no unusual noise. The power tranmission has leaked for a while, you can see the oil & dust coating on the back legs. I think it was made in the 50's and its a heavy, solid saw. Im going change the oil and put new seals and maybe a paint job. Heres a pic.

I use one (newer, but not by much ) - if you care to check on it, and trust me it will extend the life of your blades- rebuild the head pivot assembly. all the flex of the head translates to the blade in cut of a rigid part fixed to other end of flexing. Another thing to look into is the blade guide bearings. Bottom lateral bearings and top load bearing- this one gets it the worst- front and back of cut. Back of cut gets all the chips. These bearings keep the chips like they are going scrapping. Water based coolant flows better, and blades stay cooler, last longer. Oil doesn't have the water evap problem but blades run hotter, and don't last as long. Starrett blades are the best hands down, you can try what you want, but $ for $ you can't do better. Remember to use the speed pulleys = $ per cut. Blades are xpensive. They could last a lifetime if used at proper speeds. Thats one of the issues I have to fight at work all the time. Slow for steel, stainless, mid for copper- fast for brass, alluminum. Copper is a bit sticky and abrasive. its soft, but doesn't want to be cut. You can weight the head, but too much and blade will jump off pulleys. Thats no fun.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
