124 Followed Me Home
My never ending project ADD has gotten the better of me yet again. I picked up a solid, great running 124 a few days ago. It was used as a puller, and will likely continue to do so with me. There are a lot things the previous owner(s) have been into and I’m just trying to set things right. I’ll post a few pics of the issues I have and see if any of you folks can help set me straight. I’ve tried searching, but they are such common words, it’s difficult to wade through all the results.

Everything for the lift handle, rock shaft, ect has been removed. The foot rests only had the screws started on the forward end. The bolt seems to have bottomed, but it’s still not tight. Any exploded views I found don’t have any spacers there. Is this how it goes together and the bolts are too long or the threads gunked up?

Next one up, throttle cable.
I removed this to check the valve clearance, but I’m 90% sure I put it back together the way I found it. Obviously, the stop needs to be behind the speed control lever. They had the points wire passing through, I thought I’ve seen pictures with a screw in that hole. What’s the order of parts go? I’m guessing spacer, stop, wave washer and then speed control lever.

Almost forgot to post a picture of the tractor. It’s literally hiding behind the shed right now. Wife will freak out, so I’m waiting for the right time to bring it out of hiding. I’m going to have to make a temporary lean-to roof to keep it out of the weather. My shed keeps shrinking, 12x12 wasn’t nearly big enough.
The pressure plates and throw out bearing were pretty well rusted to the driveshaft from living outside. I got it freed up, but don’t want it getting any worse. I had to adjust the brake, as it was slightly dragging without touching the pedal. Everything is working as intended now, with the exception of a missing return spring. It has a homemade grill, 1’ long black iron pipe and pepper shaker muffler. It’s missing the hood ornament and shift knob. Previous owner put on rear wheels and tires from a Cyclops and removed the lift assembly. The fronts are totally dry rotted, and the inner tubes are poking through the ribs.

bolt is too long, linkage looks right after you move the stop. Tarps will hide it.

Thanks for the feedback. As it turns out, the jig is up. Wife had a friend over while I was gone from the house and her young son found it while playing in the yard. Wife took it surprisingly well. At least now work can progress easier.

Alright, I’ve gotten the governor squared away and RPM set. The front tires are the originals, I assume. They were too far gone and split at the treads. I’ve got Kenda K401 Multi Ribs in 16x6.50-8. They have a similar appearance to the originals, but lay flat. A new coat of paint and fresh bearings are up next before reinstalling.
I found a broken teaser spring and the clutch disc and drive pins are in bad shape. Plans call for a new drive shaft, blue spring, Kevlar disc, and of course a new teaser spring. The throw out bearing looks new, but I’ll find out once it’s all apart. I may get new pressure plates as the driven one is kinda buggered up from the spirol pin. Is there any need to turn the drive plate in a lathe while the pressure plates are milled? Also able to grab a few better pics of the tractor itself since she knows about it now. Edit: after flipping the pics every which way, I couldn’t get them right side up. So you’ll have settle for one from behind. I like the look with those tires and narrow fenders.

Use the stock spring, why ask for more issues down the road.

What issues could arise from the blue spring? I thought that was a fairly common change. I plan on working this tractor with a plow blade and pulling a weight transfer sled.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
