Question 982 three point hitch

I have a Cub Cadet 982 with a rear pto and three point hitch. I have problems with the tiller and brindley plow staying level and in the ground. The hitch does not float. Does anyone have a remedy.

It should float if it is set up correctly Mine doesn't float as much as a GT one but I have not had a problem plowing.

Mine is tight. I was thinking of using a piece of chain instead of the top link

pretty sure the rod running to the rear should have a slot in it to allow it to float. maybe someone replaced it with one without.

I thought the same about the slot, so I made one on my milling machine. I was unable to lift the tiller after installing the slotted bar. It pushes to lift the tiller and pulls to lower. I checked the parts diagram and the lift bar does not have a slot. I will try a chain ( a chain is used to lift the tiller on my 123)

The garden tractor lift bars have the slot. The supers don't have a slot in the lift bar.

I just checked the illustrated parts breakdown for a 782. You are right Red. Thanks for the info. I'll try and get some pics this weekend. The 982 is on loan to my son-in-law. I gave him a 782 with a mower deck and snow blower. I'M NOT GIVING HIM THE 982 ( TIL I DIE THAT IS )

Each lift rod(#7) allows some float by sliding up and down in the lift arms(#9), If you don't grease them often they bind easy. It's not a lot of movement, but it sure helps.

It hooks directly to the pivoting part that the lift cilinder attaches to, so the float pin doesn't affect it.

Ok, that's what I couldn't remember. By 1811 had a sleeve hitch on it when I bought it. It's not connected correctly (I don't think) and it has down pressure all the time. (Not been a problem yet because I have a floating rear link.) But maybe his is has the same problem. We REALLY need some pics!!

To the OP, do you not have the cat 0 tiller on it? Cause the way you worded your last statement sounds like you have the sleeve hitch tiller with the 3pt adapter on it.......
Your 123 should have a completely different set up (with the chain).
Does the tiller look like this? Or do you have the Cat 0 rear PTO style tiller?

I'm telling you, If you put a chain in place of the lift link #16 in cub123's post..... your asking for trouble! Or did you mean in place of the lifting rods #5? That would work, but I think your missing something. That hitch should not be making down pressure.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
