Default 782 w/KT17

Got a 782 cub with kt17 been sitting for a couple of years. I was not getting any spark so I put a new coil on it, still no spark. I got power on both of the small bolts on the coil. Thinking about putting new points and condenser in it but don't know how to make sure the the points are in right if anyone can help with that also and any ideas why im not getting any spark. I don't see any safety switches on the seat , I don't know if it had any before or not. thanks

First, welcome to OCC..........

Most likely, the issue is with the "points". You have two options. (A) Repair, or (B) Replace. The points can easily be cleaned by using some sandpaper (ie: 180 grit or more) or using a "point file". Clean up the contacts and you should be good to go. The condenser hardly ever goes bad (same for the ignition coil).

Neither of these parts are big money. You can purchase both, then you have comfort in knowing all the ignition parts are new.

I just replaced these on a friend's 782. ONLY use OEM Kohler points and condenser. It's a much better bet your timing will be spot on when you gap the points to the proper specs. The condenser is kinda pricey, since it is designed for the KT17. The points are the same as the K series singles, so they are cheap.

Condenser: KH-52 147 01-S OR KH-52 755 13-S

Points: KH-47 150 03-S

Definitely the points. Not too big a deal. There are plenty of how to vids on the tube.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
