K301A governor
This the first and only Kohler that I have worked on. I put rings and gaskets in it about 40 years ago. Not long ago the governor quit working, over revs easy. I took engine apart and the governor gear came off the stub shaft. The retainer screw with copper washer was still screwed in but the governor shaft with the metal tab that the governor pushes on rivet came loose. It was pushed out of the notch.Couldn't find any bushing or needle bearings in the base. Was wondering how it came off the stub shaft with retainer screw still in ??
thanks for any info |

The weld securing the tab to the shaft has broken.
I have seen that before. Lucky you did not wind up with a catastrophic failure! Improper throttle and or governor adjustment might be the culprit here by exerting too much pressure on the tab where it meets the governor shaft. Over time this might have weakened the spot weld causing it to fail? |

Mine just has a steel rivet thru the tab and shaft and it came loose. The gear on the shaft wobbles so much i knocked out the shaft and it was messed up where the gear rides. The ID. on the gear is .403k and on the shaft where it seat in the block is .372k OD. So i guess the gear is wore out???? Its the all medal one like the one in the gss-1398 service manual on page1-15. Thanks

Suppose to be a thin shim on the shaft against the block where the governor rides rides on the surface of the block.
. Easy to overlook when removing the governor as it has a tendency to stuck to the block |

I tried to fit the good side of the governor shaft back in the block to check the fit before i got another shaft and gear but it wasn't even snug.I said heck with it and went and got a 3/8"x 1/2" inch shouldered bolt ,3/8 on threaded part, cut it so id have 11/32" for gear to ride on,got the gear to fit the 1/2 inch part of the bolt.put red lock tite on threaded part, put a half size nut, full size nut hits on intake valve spring, tightened up the nut then drilled thru the boss then thru the bolt then thru boss on other side and tapped in a 3/32 tension pin with lock tite.had about 2 hours run time and seems ok ,governor works.id still like to find another block. It says to use a delco remy 1118987 voltage regulator cant find a name on the one but has L,bat, and L. the L didnt have any wires on it. i was just checking here to see what ya'll use instead.the starter gen is a delco remy# 1101996 and needs brushes. Thanks for any info.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
