Default Cold blooded 1541

We recently had 8" snowfall, and below 0 temperatures. Temp inside my garage was 10 F. (outside temp dropped to -31 overnight) I had to clear my yard before I could go to work, and my tractor wouldn't start. I had a battery charger on, and a heat lamp shining on the engine overnight, and it still wouldn't start. Would barely turn over. After another 2 hrs with a heat gun blowing on the bottom of the engine, and a propane sunflower heater pointed at the front of the engine, I finally got it started. Is there an electric preheater that will work with the engine? I have a magnetic heater, but there are no places where it will fit. A couple years ago, I got a glue on silicone heating pad, but it's too big to fit anywhere. (about 3" square) I thought maybe I could glue it to the bottom of the engine, but the bottom of the engine isn't flat. Is there an electric preheater that will work on this engine, that don't cost a fortune? Maybe 1/4 NPT that screws into the oil drain? Closest I've found is 3/8" NPT, for close to $200. Note: I just changed oil and filter this fall, 2 hrs ago, with 5W20 oil. The battery, battery cables, and starter solenoid was replaced last spring. The battery still tests good, and the battery charger indicated the battery was fully charged. Starter was replaced with new 2 years ago. No change to cranking by jumping the starter solenoid terminals.

what oil is in your hydro? maybe it needs a heater as well.

or it needs changing/cleaned as it is full of milky watery gloop.
If it has the aluminum rear end with dipstick under the seat,
Go to TSC and get a dipstick heater and drop it in the dipstick hole.
After 4 or more hours it will start quite well BTDT

I agree.... It's the hydro that makes cold starting harder. However, with the extra load on the starting circuit it's a good idea to make sure all the connections are clean and tight.

Been starting good, down to -20. I got a small (300 watt) electric space heater, removed the grille, and when snow is forecast, I put the heater in the grill opening, blowing on the front of the engine. Also put a quilt over the tractor's hood. It always pops right off when the engine is warm.
I looked into a dipstick heater, but all of them I've found have a warning that they will burn out if the heater isn't submerged at least 5' into the oil. I put a long wire down the transmission dipstick tube, and found the fluid is barely 3" deep.
I had already checked the electrical connections. The battery was new last spring, and at that time, I also replaced the battery ground cable, cable between the battery and starter solenoid, and cable between the starter solenoid and the starter.

I've got a small 35k torpedo heater. Either my 169/29 or 8n plow tractor get a 15 minute shot with a tarp on the opposite side. They pop of like a summer day. Mike

When really cold here(rare in s.c.),I pull up the hydro release valve handle on my tractors with the hydro gear trans.....seems to help...
