Good question, but I think only the IH Engineers are going know that answer.

Gears are made from a tough steel, then they usually are case hardened.
They are not hard all the way through, or they would be brittle. And to answer your question, yes they are factory hardened, or they would wear quickly. Just a quick google for you here: https://www.engineersedge.com/gears/...ring_13180.htm |

I do agree with the gears teeth being hardened too. Ive been looking for a stock set of aftermarket, not much luck finding ones with the correct hub projection, but really close. Thanks for the input guys.

Watch ebay, the gear boxes show up from time to time.
Just remember to get the right ratio, for either tiller or thrower. Some sellers don't know what they have. |

You won't find an aftermarket gear set. I spent a lot of time looking, and I know where to look.
What you will find, are good used gears, and some new available. I wish I could remember who it was who built the attachments for IH, but I don't. Whoever it was, built them for others too. The John Deere 33 tiller was made by the same company, as was their snow thrower. Both use the same gearbox. Again, you have to watch the ratio, as they differed from the IH set. That I am aware of, there are at least 3 different gear sets out there. As I recall, Deere can get the small gear still, but it's expensive. Interestingly enough, IH used the same gearbox on the Cyclo Air planters to drive the seed drum. But it is NLA. I'm betting there are other applications of that gearbox that I have yet to find. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
