Help With My 1440 Oil Leak!
Hey Guys,
Got the lawn mowed today before the rain hit but even though I ended up with the best looking cut I've had so far this year my 14hp Vanguard started puffing oil smoke every now and again while mowing. I stopped, removed the side covers and found that there was a lot of oil on both covers and it appeared to be coming from somewhere near the crankshaft and drive pulley assembly. I thought it might be a loose oil filter but it was tight, so that means the oil is coming from somewhere else... After checking the parts diagrams today I assume the oil could be coming from a failed crankcase cover gasket or outer oil seal but I couldn't get a good idea of where the oil was coming from exactly due to the shrouds, grass and crud. I removed the hood, grill, shrouds, and other sundry stuff so I could get a better idea of what needs to be fixed but I didn't have time to degrease the engine and wash everything. All that being stated I just wanted to ask what you guys think might be suspect so I'll know where to focus my efforts, and I also wanted to ask if this would be a hard fix, which if it's either of the parts mentioned earlier I think I can handle it! Thanks in advance for the help! |

My guess is a bad front seal but you will need to find out what is leaking before any of us can help.

Got her clean this afternoon and ran it around a bit to discover that it is the front seal. Now can any of you guys tell me what I need to order? just a seal and a crankcase cover gasket, or does the job require more stuff?
Thanks again for your help! |

You should be able to put a couple screws through the seal and pull the old one out without removing the front cover. You will need a tube of some sort that will fit over the crank shaft to drive the new one back in. I would not remove the front cover if it was me just to change that seal.

Got the new seal in this evening and let it run for a few minutes to verify the repair was a success. I got everything buttoned back up and she's ready to mow tomorrow! Got to love a $6.00 fix! Thanks again for the help, Sam!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
