LT1042 consistently slow
Picked up a cheap LT1042 while I restore my QuietLine.
Has a 46" deck and actually mows pretty well. However, it is VERY slow. Just about walking pace. It pulls, it climbs hills, it will cut through 3 foot tall grass... but its just slowww. I doesn't seem to me like the belt is slipping as the speed doesn't vary while mowing and not more than usual climbing hills. I do plan to change the belt when I have time to pull it all apart, but I'm wondering what else could it be? I've searched a bit and see that there is a linkage adjustment. Will try that. Also which one of these is most likely if the other tests don't pan out? - Internal bypass valve may need to be inspected - low fluid levels - fluid contamination - clogged filter thanks!

They're fairly slow mowers. If you speed them up forward they usually don't now as well.
First thing I'd do is gps your speed both forward and reverse. Supposed to be 5.2mph forward and 2.3 mph reverse. If you adjust the linkage you will get more forward speed and less reverse or vise versa depending on which way you adjust it. There really is no serviceable filter. To change it you have to remove the trans and open it up. It's just a screen. Just look it over for leaks, if it's low you can top it off with 10w30 engine oil. It's a bit of a pain to do. The most obvious thing on the top is the vent, the fill/ drain plug is slightly under the fan.

That series is just slow. By design, I guess. I hated the GT my dad had back in the day growing up.

My 1042 gets slow too. I'm not convinced that it is just the nature of the machine. If I apply the foot feed rapidly forward it is slow. But if I ease into it slowly, then when it reaches about 2/3 of the way, I mash it down all the way and it is very much so moving faster. I removed the unit from the chassis and cleaned everything and changed the fluid. Replaced old fluid with VR1 20w50 per recommendation from local cub cadet dealer. Put it all back together and no change. I've read some things about the linkage springs getting weak and not holding enough tension on the valves. That is what I was going to look into next.
