We have liftoff, Scotty!

I pulled the kill wires off the coil (both of them), cranked the engine and it started. Spark on both cylinders. I must have had one diode killing the other coil as Oak described in the thread I linked.

Since my VOM won't check diodes, I'll just hook up one, then the other kill wire to see which one is shorted.

Thanks.

Now, what is the difference between a 14 and 16 hp Vanguard?

2 HP Sorry but I couldn't resist.

Glad you got it running.

Same bore + stroke so probably something to do with the carb or marketing.

The tech that delivered mine years ago told me that the carb is the only difference. Put a 16hp carb on it and you have a 16hp. I never did.

I see that now. You posted a minute before I did so I missed it. If the 14 and the 16 are the same engine then it follows that the 14 should turn a 48" mower just like what is recommended for a 1641 tractor.

My problem must have been a failed diode as described by Oak in a previous thread.

FWIW, the Parts Tree site lists different OEM carb numbers for 14/16 engines. Different replacement carb numbers too.

Don't know what the difference is. The butterfly is the same size.

The jets in the Carb are larger in the 16hp. This is what he told me. I've never messed with the internals of a carb, only cleaned them. I don't know if you can replace the parts in the 14hp with those used in a 16hp or if you'll need to replace the entire carb.

Mike

I just checked Parts Tree and the part numbers are the same for both the 1641 and the 1440. I looked at the later serial numbers for both tractors. They show the carb as delivered being 808251 on both and the replacement being 809011.

Edit: Did a little more digging the 1440 came with engine 294447-1145 the 1641 came with engine 303447-1147 the replacement engine for both the 1440 and the 1641 is engine 305447-3079. My guess is the real difference between the 1440 and the 1641 is the hydraulic lift.

I checked the early serial numbers.

As far as the complete engines having a different part number, if a complete engine includes the air cleaner, just the HP decal being different might change the engine assy part number?

Whatever it is, seems the general concensus here is any difference in the engines are insignificant

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
