Todd,
Hey I just missed your post today at lunch. Wow Sorry to hear that you are laid up. The Cub can wait till your better.
I hope each day is an improvement for your elbow. Do you plan to have surgery on the rotators cuffs? Or do they just have to heal?
I will be thinking a lot about you in the next few weeks.
FYI I was able to get out and look at the tiller a little tonight.
With lots of grunting and a hot wrench I got both end extensions off the drive shaft tube.
I pulled the belt housing out of the tank and cut off the inside guard due to rust holes ( picture #2). Also I could not get in there to clean. I did a skim coat of bondo to fill most of the rust pits on the exterior show side. And put on a coat of primer. Just amazing what a new coat of paint will hide
I was thinking about leaving this inside guard off? Or I could whittle out a new plate and tack it in place. Any suggestions. Sounds like these original belt guards are somewhat hard to find. I think I know why. I assume that putting the belt on with this guard in place is a challenge, so most folks just left them off?
Regards,
Chris

Chris, keep up the (expert work) your doing a fine job.
I had one rotator done already and only got 1 1/2 years of use before it went again, so at this time it's both rotator cuffs and tennis elbow with some other nerve damage, just wearing out I guess. Injesctions again tomorrow, arms aren't made to do what I've asked them for the past 26 years. But it could always be worst. Thanks for asking.

Update on the tiller body,
Removed the body from the rust removal tank after 24 hours. Hand wire brushed off most of the black gunk and rinsed. I sprayed it down with a engine cleaner solution and then bristle brushed and rinsed again. Dried it. Then used the cup wire brush on the 4 inch grinder to get a fair surface finish. Lots of pits, lots of holes. I welded up some of the holes. Then decided to add a new .10 inch thick x 3 inch wide strip on the inside of the leading edge where all the damage happens, right behind the tines. The body was bent and cracked a lot on this edge. So I clamped the steel in place and MIG welded it about every inch. This is going to strengthen this area a lot. Then I shined it up and added a couple thin coats of body filler to smooth this transition out. It will require several hours of additional attention to start to look like it is supposed to.

On the belt guard:
I have decide that I will make a new inside guard plate for the belt guard. I am going to cut it out of some sheet metal laying around. Maybe those old Cub fenders will be a donor?
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
I had trouble with the camera last night
I continued work on the body and filled in more pits. The hinged back panel was the next to come out of the tank and it had a lot of pitting too. So that got a first coat of bondo.
On the belt guard I was going to cut the new inner cover replacement part from the fender pan of a Wheel Horse A90 that is for parts. I could not bring myself to do it (some tractor restorer may need those fenders). So I cut the half moon shape from a piece of new steel .10 thick. Ground it to fit and MIGed in place. It came out OK and will be safer with full guarding.
Will try to get some shots tonight.
Next part out of the tank is one of the end shields.
Regards,
Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
