Default 1440 deck questions

I have a 1440 that has a 44inch deck, the deck is rusted out bad. I tried to install a 46 inch deck model number 336. Deck spins too fast and is dragging the motor down. Is there a way to use this deck on the 1440 or should i just keep looking for a 44 inch or a 46 inch model 321?

How large is the drive pulley on the 46 vs the one on the 44 you had?

The pully on the 44 is 5 and 1/8, the 46 is 5. Didnt have a problem with the 44 but when i put the 46 on the first time i tried using the mule drive that came with it and the pto belt kept jumping. Swapped it for the the one that came on the 1440 belt no longer jumps off but the motor drags down bad. Deck spins freely so i dont think its a deck issue. Only other difference i have seen is the pullyz on the mule drives are different diams. Not sure if it helps or not but the pully on the pto is 6inch.

The Mower Decks for the 1440 were:

* 190-318-100 44" Deck
* 190-320-100 42" Deck

I doubt what you getting from the 46" is overspeed. The 46 is a high vac deck. It takes more effort to turn it. I run one with a mag 12 engine without a problem really. The engine needs to be on point running wise. Governor needs to be adjusted well. And I'm running at about 3800 rpm. With that said I also need to keep the blades sharp and underneath cleaned after cutting with it. Diameter of mule drive pulleys will have no effect on rpm of deck.

336 deck was used on tractors with the small diameter PTO so yes you are over speeding it. You may be able to replace the double pulley with one for the 321 deck Cub Cadet 756-3049 Pulley, Double The 336 deck uses double pulley # 759-3652

336 deck was used on the following tractors according to Partstree
Cub Cadet 984, 1914, 1872 & 2072, 1772, 1572 S/N 756,300 - 799,999, 2082, 1882 S/N 800,000 - 821,059, 2182 S/N 800,000 - 816,535, 1782 S/N 800,000 - 821,059, 986 and 982

Looking at the 321 and 336 it looks like the biggest difference is the PTO to deck pulley, may be other things also.

My bad, I am sure Sam Mac is correct. For some reason I thought the the 44 deck you had was not a high vac.

Thank you both for your help. I will either try the 321 pully or i might just sell the 336 and keep looking for the right model deck.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
