Default "Big Red" 682 possible project?

I'm thinking about restoring this 682 I have sitting in my garage, the other half of my two-fer pickup a few weeks ago, and swapping out the non running KT17 Series 1 with an extra Magnum M18 (with wiring adaptations for the different ignition system) I have if I can get it running.

But I don't know if I'm going to. EVERYTHING is rusted on it. The worst of it is the lift handle button on top is rusted tight, I keep soaking it with PB Blaster and letting it soak for days and then tapping it with a hammer and it hasn't broken loose yet. I think the rust is all the way down inside, and I may never get it freed up.

I do have a question about the rear though... The main part of the rear is cast iron, but the axle tubes don't look like the other cast iron rear I had from a 149 or even the 73 I have currently in my driveway... They look like aluminum. Did IH use a cast iron rear and aluminum axle tubes at this point in production?

Take the handle off, Mix up some acetone and ATF in a small bucket. Soak both ends for a couple days. Thats what I had to do with one of mine. If that does not free it up take the handle off and use a little heat. Patience is the key

You could also cap one end of a 3 foot long piece of pvc pipe and fill that to soak the whole thing!

I have a 1450 that came with a cast differential and aluminum axle tubes. Swapped out the aluminum tubes for cast ones.

Yes. IH switched to aluminum axle tubes the QL series tractors, but kept the CI differential housing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
