I'm hoping for a used one in the $50 range.

I know it's "pictures or it didn't happen" but it's hard to get a picture of internet searches, emails and phone calls. Over the last 24 hours I think I have located about 99% of the missing parts required to put this "parts tractor" back together. Fellow member Sorner has a Cyclops being parted and we are working on a deal for a decent fender pan and some plastic. He is fairly close to me so a road trip is in the works. I located an air cleaner on Ebay from a Jacobson mower (same Kubota powerplant) and the mounting bracket from Patton. The shut down solenoid was only $39 from DB Electric. I know a couple of you guys recommended going with a simple mechanical shut down cable, and I gave that serious thought when the price of a solenoid was thought to be around $250. Figuring a good cable would be around $20 anyway plus some fab time to drill the dash and make a bracket at the motor end, the $39 was just about a wash so I went with a electric solenoid. My next big project will be to re-solder the header plate on the radiator and pressure test it. Stay tuned.

Slowly chipping away at all the little things that need attention. The tilt wheel mechanism was all bent up so I replaced that. I've never seen a hydraulic valve body rot away like this one did. Of course the spool was seized too. I replaced it and a couple of hydraulic lines while I was under the dash.
I'm waiting for 3 sets of rings and 1 piston. The 640 had massive blow-by, so I tore it down to take a look. The bores miked in at .0025 wear. Max allowable is .006. One piston had a bad ring land and all three had ring end gaps of .075 - .090" I'm surprised it ran! Kubota sure thinks there parts are special. The head gasket alone, not a set, just the head gasket was $68 It's only about 5" x 10" !!!!
More to follow as the junkyard dog returns to life!

Looks like the one that was in the 2182 I parted that sat in a field for 15 years. Keep plodding along and show us what you did.

When I did my deal with CubDieselFan, I got the project 1772 I just finished and a 1782 "for parts." Here's a picture of it when I brought it home. The D640 Kubota is in pretty decent shape, turns over on the starter, and shows signs of wanting to run, so the decision was made to spend some time to make it run and move. Yep, I've decide to put it together!
Here's where it is now with the tin off, a good bath, the fuel tank cleaned and all new fuel lines / filters. The steering was set up when we loaded it down in Tennessee. Today I found the upper nylon block that is the bearing for the tilt steering was seized to the shaft. After freeing it and cleaning the shaft, the steering wheel turns easily. I've never seen a hydraulic valve as rusty as the lift valve on this 1782. Replacing it is on the to do list, along with the rusty hydraulic lines.
This one has good bones, AND IT'S TOO GOOD TO PART OUT!!
Awesome project!! You are so correct... you can't save them all but you sure can't part any Diesel Cub Cadet out!!

My 1782 is one of my favorites to actually work.. combined with the 374 Haban deck it is a real grass cutting beast!!

It's been a while since I've posted an update, so here goes. The D640 Kubota diesel is back in the frame after some clean up work. I've been cleaning up wiring connections and making circuits tests through the safety switches etc. It's much easier to do it now when everything is out in the open.
In the "what parts did you get for your Cub today" post it's mentioned that I stopped and met member Steve Orner (Sorner) on my way back home to NY from a visit with friends in Floyd Virginia. Attached are a couple pictures of the grill, hood, fenders, and footrests I got from Steve on a trade deal. Thanks Steve! The 1782 looks much better in shiny paint.

Nice work Stan. Everything is coming together. Glad to see members getting together as well and assisting with bringing these back to life.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
