Drive shaft adapter p/n 719-3096 compatibility list:

Since it lists a Cub 3235 which has a 23HP V-twin Kohler, I'm going to take the chance that it will fit the Vanguard. Found a used one for $21. Won't be the first $21 I've wasted if it won't work.

OK here is what I did. I compared the flywheel on your engine to the one on a LT2180 that I have here. Part numbers are the same. So then I looked up the drive shaft adapter and the pin that goes in the center of the crank. This is the info.

351447-1180-A1 your engine
808768 flywheel


350447-1111-E1 LT2180 engine
808768 flywheel


719-3096 Adapter, Drive Shaft
711-3330 Pin, Locating, .352 Dia x 1.156

So if all of this is correct you should be able to use a stock Cub adapter. If you plan on using the rag joint setup you'll need to get something machined to fit between the part that holds the ball and the other adapter. I'm sure Jeff in PA could turn one out for you.


Edit: I was thinking that the part with the ball sat into the adapter. It looks like it sits flat so it should just bolt to the 719-3096. You may still need a custom length drive shaft but this should be about as simple a re-power as it get's.

I have some latitude on where to locate the engine. Worst case, custom drive shaft.

Just thought of a cool way to do the drive shaft using a CV joint on the engine end. I need to take a look and see what I have in the shop. I'll get back to you later. You can probably get the adapter and the centering pin from the sponsors at the top of the page. It should be the same thing as used on a 1440, 1641, 2160, 2165, LT2180

CV joint sounds cool, but with the 7193096 part I only spent $21 and got it coupled.
I can put all the hex nuts back in the can.
I just sold the 13HP Harbor Freight motor for what I paid for the 782. I'm happy.
Working on getting the Vanguard running. That's a whole story in itself. It was mounted on a mower that was in a building that caught fire. The motor saw some heat, minor stuff; wiring damaged. The guy I bought it from tried to make a wiring harness (crude work), replaced #2 cylinder armature and the starter. Had it running, but just not right. Got fed up and sold it to me.
I'm waiting on a bunch of gaskets, correct wiring harnesses and a voltage regulator/rectifier to arrive.

Good to see you find stock parts to work. I know it always easier to hook to a hydro. (drive shaft length) Mine, i'm usually setting up for a gears trans. When i put the ch in the 682 if i would have had a clutch hanger, it would have had a clutch in front of that hydro. I had everything else. Yes i know, something to pull on the clutch while still allowing the hydro to return to neutral. Hey Sam, you out of hydro adapters? I'm setting on a 2518 driveshaft. Mike
