Does that mean when your blades get dull you just throw them away? lol

If he was able to "machine" them.. grind off what he needed. I doubt they were truly hardened.

I think I have read that the G-6 Gator blades are of a special hardened steel.

FWIW,

We do hear it said that something is so hard you can't touch it with a file BUT,
grinding is often the finish operation after heat treating tool steel to increase its hardness.

Think of it, if you can't grind a blade to sharpen it, what good is it? ( I hear ya, Remove and Replace $$$) Most of us don't have EDM's for in home sharpening of mower blades. (electro discharge machine)

Conclusion; If it's so hard that grinding won't cut it, then, I think it safe to say grass won't dull it.

Really? You can’t grind hardened steel?
I should sell my surface grinder then. It’s useless.

I grind cutting edges. Everyone does. However, I have never narrowed a mower blade to fit a spindle. That is the part that makes me queezy. I would think that would negate an possibility of a warranty.

I would just be concerned of it being out of balance. Something spinning that fast, that sharp, with just a little vibration, you would be lucky if it just wore out a bearing.

Fellows there IS such a thing as only hardening part of a piece of steel. It all depends on what the material is. I really doubt a lawn mower blade is truly hardened in the machining sense of the term. I bet we have all bent a blade, but how many of us have broken one? Hard items don't usually bend, they break. I'm thinking the tips of the blades may be induction hardened, case hardened, FNC treated, etc. If I get bored one day I'll take an old blade to work and see what it reads near the bolt hole. My guess is under 40rc.

Oh, and I think Gator blades suck for grass cutting. Dull quick, can't sharpen the wing easily, they don't suck up the grass, and they don't discharge as far. Mulching leaves, they are good at.

Of course you can. With a surface grinder. You think the average home owner had a surface grinder and proper wheel for hardened steel? The point was blades are typically not hardened to the point of not being able to sharpen them.

I said I doubt HE could machine them if they were hardened. Didn't say anything about you.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
