Bent Exhaust Push Rods on a CH18S
I have a 2518 with a CH18S engine. It has about 750 hours on the meter. It has been using about a pint of oil on each mow. I was hoping to nurse it and feed it oil thru the season and tear into it over the winter. The engine changed my mind yesterday. It has been smoking while running, but yesterday was more than usual. It finally shut off and quit. I was assuming a blown head gasket, because it had zero compression. Upon tearing it down I found that BOTH exhaust push rods were bent, and found that the valve seats on exhaust valves were pushed out, and had the exhaust valves were blocked open. So that caused the zero compression. I'm trying to determine should i try to get the heads machined and call it a good repair, or should i go further? I had checked compression about 6 months ago when I noticed the oil usage, and #1 had about 105 psi, and #2 was about 115 psi. Looking for some guidance.

Put new heads on it. That was a common failure point on the CH motors. There are upgraded heads. Fixing the old will cost as much or more than new heads. Last time I looked, they aren't too expensive for what they are.

Do you have a suggestion as to where I can get set of heads that are complete with the valves installed? In my cub parts manual it looks like I would have to purchase the pieces and parts and assemble a complete head.

I do not believe they offer them new with valves installed. Shop around.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
