Well, after a long stay under a shed the 2284 is back in the shop. Check out this NOS necessary evil---must come from Cadet, not available from any where else.

You gonna be able to afford vitals for the table John? I'm pretty sure Cub is proud of that...

Yeah, I got it on sale last year. This mower is one of those that is a classic example of buy it cheap because you don't know what its going to need. Deck bearings are next.

Well the new muffler is FANTASTIC! Baffle was broke loose on the inside of the old one.
So, I thought I could get by with bearings and seals and an idler pulley. Idler arm and maybe pivot bolt are shot. Its rustier than I thought. The outer pulleys are pretty well warped (I have no idea how). Think I'm gonna have to order a few more parts. In the meantime, wonder what spray cans Lowes has that's close? Rest of the machine doesn't look that great either but all I want to do is mow grass so I'm not really worried about it. All I'm really after is getting the deck mechanically solid, too many other "projects" in waiting. Figure this would be a good place to stop for the evening.

Too bad about the deck, looks pretty bad, if it had a small pto on it you could use a different deck on it.
The purchase of the muffler is nice John, when it is in the woods, does it make a sound? Can you hear the sea when you put it to your ear?

Around here you'd pay a small fortune to get another deck, and well, then you are getting a used deck. If all goes well, lots of new parts will be on this one! In the long run, that's a good thing.

Slowly chipping away at this thing. I know the color is wrong, grass don't care and neither do I. It matches the faded paint on the rest of the machine. Pulled everything off the deck, painted it, put it back together and painted it again. Various methods of paint rust removal---(hand grinders with hard disc, flap wheel, and wire brush) as well as application of Rust Mort. Do us all a favor and lets not turn this into another paint debate as in recent weeks.
The deeper I dug the worse the deck got. The only thing I'm able to use over is the deck, bearing housings, wheels (replacing bushings in them) and blades. New spindles, seals, bearings, pulleys, idler assembly (ALL OF IT), wheel bolts, 30-40 carriage bolts to put it together with, belts, mule drive pulleys. If I EVER buy another old lawnmower, I'm going to figure in rebuilding the deck completely--this is 2 in a row that required all the same parts. Got my bearing housings back together, just need my last 2 spindles so I can install them. Ready to run this thing and slay some grass.

Hey the deck looks pretty good compared to when you started and like you said the grass does not care what color it is. It should do a great job of killing grass.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
