Can a K301aqs off a JD212 be swapped with my Cub Cadet 1200?
Hello all!
I found a JD212 that has a good running K301aqs. The engine in my Cub 1200 smokes a little. Would I have any problems swapping these engines out? I know some parts outside the engine may need to be swapped, but is the block, crank and everything else the same? |

Usually the crank is different as well as the oil pan, you may be able to switch pans but I can't guarantee it because there are a few different style blocks. How bad does the Cub engine smoke? These engines will run forever smoking. If you're getting the Deere cheap enough you may be better off to clean it up and resell it and take the money from the sale and rebuild the Cub engine.

I agree with Tim. Oil is inexpensive! :-)

Nope, the 212 engine sits sideways in the frame and has a manual PTO so the output shaft on the crank is differant, you could swap the the crank, oil pan, and flywheel but at that point your rebuilding an engine so your better off working with the original Cub block.

Bummer. Thanks for the info guys!! I guess Ill end up rebuilding this one. This 1200 seems to be a unicorn of sorts!
This one is my first Cub. I traded for it on spot, didnt get to research it. I'm finding out real fast that I shouldve started with a narrow frame, LOL! So far, mostly new drive shaft and components, new ISO mounts and changed some nasty fluid out of the rear end. I'll probably pop the head off soon and see if maybe the head gasket is causing some smoke. Maybe Ill get lucky. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
