147 Stumbling Problem Solved: Weak Coil
I never posted a Q about this, but have been chasing my tail for longer than I care to admit on this one. After a complete rebuild of the K321 it fired up with ease and seemed to run really well.
Fast forward to the project sitting for a long time and picking it up again. I've been having to use choke every single time to start it, no matter how warm it is. Furthermore, any increase in throttle and it would stumble and die. Around in circles I went, moving from timing, to valve clearance, to cleaning the carb. Rinse-repeat. My error was the assumption that since the coil was firing, there was no need to investigate that. I found a replacement for under $11 and thought, what the heck. BINGO, that was it. It simply was not getting strong enough spark. I was then able to set the Hi/Lo on the carb and she throttles up nicely. Set the timing with my Sun gun and it's running like a champ. What has me baffled is this replacement coil. No mention at all that it was made in chyna. It just came in a box with a Long Island, NY address. I feel like I've stepped into a time machine. HTH |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
