[QUOTE=CubbyRI;502581]OK this is the kind of confusion. I am holding in my hand a regulator that has four terminals. L, Batt, F (field), and one on the bottom that is Armature.

I can't argue if he has a v/r that is stamped "armature".

OK Guys, to clear it up what I am doing, I bought a 100 to restore. Since then, I have picked up a couple more tractors a 70 and a 123 IIRC, and even more parts (two hydro rears, a couple SG's) .

HOW-EVER as General Burkhalter used to say, this particular issue is with the SG I posted above and the regulator I posted above, installed on an antique engine. yes, I fitted a Cub cadet CCW SG to an antique engine in my boat. Works wonderful.

BUT now I have to hook up the Regulator and discovered it is not straight forward.

The SG I have is listed for a later 12x tractor.

The regulator I have has terminals L-Bat-F and one unmarked on the bottom!

Will it work, or not?

In my humble opinion, it will work if you wire it as described for the 70/100 drawing above.
However, assuming that your boat does not have a stee/metal frame where you will mount the v/r, you will need a grounding strap from the v/r case to the motor or neg terminal of the battery.

thanks iron

yep. I recall reading somewhere that the VR must have a good ground, so I ran a tinned marine wire from the VR mounting ear right to the SG bracket, using tinned marine crimp loops.

As far as the tractor project, I dont think I have a wiring harness for the tractor and might make one, although I bet if I click the sponsors here I can find aftermarket harnesses.

BTW, what RPM do the SGs start making a decent charge? This engine runs at 500rpm with a 10" flywheel and I made a double pulley that's IIRC 3.5" so thats 1500rpm at the generator. If you can tell me what the CC tractor rpm has to be to see the ammeter move decently, I can convert that.

1500 rpm is barely above idle speed for a Ciub Cadet with the Kohler engine.

Gotta get a bigger pulley, but not a bigger boat...

And if your real lucky it might put out 1 amp that low of an rpm, possibly not.
Remember, this is a generator not an alternator, alt's charge a lot more at 1500
than a generator.
In a kohler engine application IIRR, the motor pulley is maybe 5-6" and the motor pulley is about 2-3"
So at rated 3600 motor rpm's where it charges a full 15 Amp, the generator is turning prolly near 5000 rpm's
Now this is just approximation, because I haven't measured the actual size of the pulley's I don't have.

Thats 1500 generator rpm... engine 500rpm. engine pulley is 10" generator pulley is about 3.5". I can put a smaller pulley on the SG tho. So, if have to, I will. But gotta get the VR installed and see the charging amps first.

How many amps do you guys see with these anyway?

A Cub Cadet S/G at full throttle (3600 RPM's), puts out 15 Amps.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
